“It’s a beautiful time to celebrate love and connection after being so far apart for so long,” Francesco Risso told Dazed shortly after his Marni spring/summer 22 redefined the fashion show experience.. In reaction to two socially-distanced, virtual and screen-experienced years, the Sardinia-born, CSM-educated, Miuccia Prada-trained creative director celebrated a sense of togetherness with an intimate and collaborative catwalk experience, Wear We Are, which dressed attendees in bespoke upcycled Marni and showcased Marni’s chosen-family in the eclectic, stripe, flower and fun-filled wardrobe. “Unity and uniqueness – we’re collectively evolving the Marni identity,” he explained to Vogue.
From the moment he replaced Consuelo Castiglioni at the helm of the off-kilter luxury label that she built, Francesco Risso’s Marni identity has been playful, youthful, unexpected, thought provoking and, most importantly, fun! This revolving kaleidoscope of a collection took us even deeper as it was a celebration of not just the Marni he loves but the community he is cultivating. “This project is about pushing things forward together, as a collective,” he teased to Vogue in a preview feature last September. He’s dressing a movement and post-pandemic, his ever-expanding Marniverse is all the more enticing because it’s obvious that we’re stronger together. “Since COVID created this very strong sense of separation, it made us all think about how important it is to create a connection between us and the Marni lovers,” he added in the recent Dazed feature. As the Marni spring/summer 22 Vol.2 show notes explained, this was “a collection about the act of getting dressed to be together.” When we are all tired of living life through Zoom socials, Teams bonding and WhatsApp check-ins, Francesco reminded us of the power of dressing up and experiencing the real-world with our nearest and dearest.
Inspired by Marni’s joyful celebration of community and real-world connection, LN-CC dressed five of our favourite skaters in the fun-filled collection and took them on a minibus day trip out of London to Swalecliffe Skatepark on the south-east coast for friendly trick one-upmanship, stone skimming. and soggy-chip sharing. Fresh from finishing his latest photobook, a collection of 80 images of South Florida set to be released this month, LN-CC’s go-to photographer-by-the-sea Bob Foster was on hand to document the action. Against the coastal backdrop and grey skies filled with late spring showers, the colourful personalities of Madi, Valentine, Faith, Reuben, Pablo – and Marni too – are all the more vivid. Come and join us, Wear We Are…
