Youths in Balaclava

Youths in Balaclava first came onto the scene from a photo documentary book undertaken by Dover Street Market. When the conceptual store launched its Singapore branch they sent photographer Ryan O’Toole Collett to document its opening and whilst there, photographer Collett was commissioned to look out for another side of the country, which was different to its classic image of a beautiful tropical efficient if somewhat too clean and regulated city state. Ryan came across a group of friends who called themselves the ‘Youths in Balaclava’, an assortment of like-minded people interested in exploring a different perspective towards street culture in all its myriad forms: music, art and fashion which eventually resulted in a photo documentary book published in 2017. Now two years later, Youths in Balaclava have released several collections after being celebrated from the publicity on Collett’s book. The brand is influenced by music, with genres ranging from grunge, punk and electropunk to normcore, pop, rap, and rock. The diversity of the music Youths in Balaclava listen to is characteristic of their approach to fashion, which is experimental, chaotic, and customised. The brand may have been born into a city with fancy, shiney, high-end stores on nearly every block, however there’s large percentage of the population who aren’t able to afford these luxury items and Youths in Balaclava’s style reflects this disparity, embracing what they love by creating their own look. This season the streetwear brand produces a menswear capsule collection that compromises a selection of T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and pants that feature tongue-in-cheek slogans, graphic prints and colour-block panels. Staple pieces include the panelled Fleece Bunker Pants, boxy-fit T-shirts and the Bandits Utilitarian Jacket
