Raf Simons x Smiley
Since it was first published as Franklin Loufrani’s symbol for positive news in France Soir back in 1972, Smiley has emerged as an emblem of possibility and promise. It was the face of defiant optimism for the raver generation of the hedonistic 80s and early 90s, before becoming the original emoticon and heralding a new language. Today the forever grinning ideogram marks its 50th anniversary by collaborating with Raf Simons on a mood-enhancing capsule collection. Raf Simons x Smiley continues the designer’s exploration markers of culture, stating: “I love the optimism Smiley projects. I love the focus on a brighter and better future”. Across the collection, the optimism is copied, pasted and manipulated onto a number of Simons staples, including his signature denim shirt and cropped sweater, alongside a 2022 appropriate update of the iconic Youngsville University crewneck that featured on designer’s first-ever runway show in autumn/winter 97.
