Tremaine Emory of Denim Tears designs garments to highlight black American culture and push for social change, his partnership with sportswear giant Champion continues to spotlight the African American experience by celebrating the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, one of the greatest black-founded American cultural arts companies of all time. The capsule calls on the dance-troupe’s founder and namesake throughout; printing Ailey’s name and image on retro-style collegiate sweats, varsity jackets and crochet bucket hats. The collaborative collection wields a black, red and green colourway to honour the Pan-African movement, and while Champion’s signature reverse weave fabric furthers the all-American feel, Emory also uses madras plaids. Reclaiming it from 1950s yuppies and writing a new chapter in the fabric’s colonial history. At its heart, Champion Tears is a commemorative tapestry of Black American history; it is joyous, subversive and full of life.
